Artist - Eklipz

Thursday, September 23rd we rolled out to the Manifesto 2010 - Made You Look art show; me, Born (Eklipz), Rae and Lee.  My husband, artist Eklipz, was one of the artists; he had some of his pieces showcased from his Hip Hop Homage - The Art of Eklipz series.  It was a real nice event and the art work represented was a variety of amazing pieces by some of Canada's most talented artists.


As Rae & I, walked around the gallery, got some drinks, visited each artist's bodies of work, got some more drinks, mixed, mingled, the DJ was had the vibes on lock; we were happy ladies.  For a Toronto crowd at a Toronto event, people were very humble, polite, interactive and friendly, but then again we were at an art exhibit, art can be very humbling.  Art is about expressing yourself and engaging in the works and the people around who are admiring it; I love experiences like this because it reaffirms that there is still a large collective spirit in regards to "art" of human interaction and places where self expression is freedom, where intimidation and anxiety of being ONE'S SELF is eliminated, or at least people around you are willing and feel free to be individuals.

One of the things Rae and I noticed besides the beautiful art, was the beautiful people.  All races, backgrounds, styles, energies, it was comforting, enlightening and vibrant.  Hip Hop culture is more than just the music, it transcends boundaries, pushes ideologies and I find is eclectic beyond it's ways of just the 4 main elements. It's expanding and growing and collecting many jewels on it's path constantly rejuvenating itself.  We also noticed, the many women who came out, none of whom looked the same.  No carbon copies, no cliques, no over the top trying to stand out versions of our modern day media cut outs.  Just women with senses of individuality, their own style, their own swag; their own sense of representation. We were loving it!  We had a light blub moment and thought this is a great random opportunity to capture visuals of some women with style distinction and this could be a blog feature every now and then called "Unboxed Style".  These posts will feature the stylings of women we see, who's style or fashion represents themselves in a way that make them unique, exude confidence, show the opposite of what mainstream deems as "what's in" or "beauty" or isn't afraid to be an individual, comfortable, simple, plain, unique, artistic, or a "unconventional fashonista" perhaps in the sense of still putting their own spin on things that makes their energy shine.  "Unboxed Style" comes in all forms, levels, degrees, but the main things is it empowers women to be themselves and feel comfortable in their own skin/clothes no matter what anyone else thinks, not expecting any approval from anyone.


Here are a few pictures of some beautiful, diverse, down-to-earth women we met and talked to; some were artists themselves and some just had a love for the arts.  We thought they represented the level of being "Simply Unboxed".   I want to thank them again for allowing us to take their pictures.

It's called Erotic Asphyxiation, and guess what I hear it's the in thing!

So,  I hear Jay Electronica has thing, this little conversation piece has with his audience. that he has done at a few of his shows about how women like to be choked during sex.  I call it a stint cause he's done it a few times before during other shows and it's stupid.  Now, during your shows as an artist I think when its appropriate, given the setting and atmosphere, the artist can conduct their stage show as they please, hopefully with sense.  However, even the dopest artist sometimes don't use common sense.  I am hearing there is alot of backlash towards him in regards this "show conversation".  Now I wasn't there but I have talked to someone who was there (a male) who even feels, he didn't have to "go there" at this outdoor festival that is all ages; I'm sure there were a few children and quite a few youth there.  Plus, I have watched his jokey joke on video and it was hahahahaha, not funny.  From what I get it was a conversation about how women like to be choked during sex....all women liked to be choked to different degrees of choking...WTH!  I thought the festival was about fulfillment Hip Hop gives as a culture. Why was this a topic of discussion on stage at an outdoor festival?  In the club, whatever, I guess, if that what you need to have a discussion over but come on seriously.  Another thing, have you ever heard of young men being told, "Trust me dude when a girl says no she's playin hard to get, they like it rough".  What does this lead to when in the hands of a young male who has no sense....Rape.  Anyways, you may feel like "Relax Queen he didn't say nothing about rape" but neither does anybody else when they give bad advice in regards to handling a women when it comes to the act of sex.  The worst person to get advice from when it comes to what women want or how they like something is someone who is not a woman.  *sigh*  These stupid things that get told to people who can't think for themselves lead to abuse against women, molestation and rape, and if you think not, I dare you to speak to someone who has been raped or abused.

Jay Jay Jay, let your talents speak volumes and let s@#! come out where it's suppose to come out, not from your mouth brotha man.  Keep focus Keep focus on the good stuff

Well, if this was a way to get people talking about him then I guess it's working...And for all the women out there that have a thing for being erotically asphyxiated then I don't know what to say besides make sure you have a plan b if things get a little to intense, like a bottle, or a lamp within arms reach, but a word from the wise, breathing is a gift that can be taken away under a stupid act such as that, it's hard to yell for someone to stop or yell for help when you can't breathe.  ...Ya ya ya, it's all fun and games until someone gets a little too rough with their girl or a girl for that matter.

The Hamilton Police Female Choir has selected the Be-you-tiful girls club as this year's ''Charity of Choice"!! They will be making their special presentation at our Be-You-tiful Girls Day, as well as doing a special performance for the girls and interacting with the girls in the day.
